HD Tune Guide – Testing Your HDD/SSD

HD Tune is a useful tool for testing the performance and health of your hard drive or SSD. Start by selecting the disk you want to test, and then choose the function you wish to use. Below we go through the most important features.

Benchmark

Why run a benchmark?
A benchmark helps measure the speed and responsiveness of your drive. It gives you insights into:

  • Minimum, maximum, and average transfer speed

  • Access time (how quickly your files can be opened)

  • CPU usage during large file transfers

File Benchmark

File Benchmark works similarly to a regular benchmark but focuses more on stability during file transfers rather than just speed.

A graph will show you how stable your drive is and whether there are any performance drops or errors. In the example, data is transferred at 600 MB/s – the maximum capacity of the installed SSD.

Health

This feature uses S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) to assess the health of your drive. The table includes:

  • ID: The measured parameter

  • Current: Current value

  • Worst: The worst value recorded

  • Threshold: The critical limit that should not be breached

  • Status: OK, caution, or failed

Error Scan

Click Start to scan the entire surface of your disk for errors.

  • Green = sector is healthy

  • Red = sector has errors or is damaged

In the example, the scan was run on a Shark Gaming SSD 480 GB and took just over 19 minutes. The transfer speed was around 429 MB/s – very acceptable for a standard SSD.
